TheDepartment of Psychiatry, Division of General Psychiatry Geography 3 with the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) is seeking a General Practitioner who is interested in joining the Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) program working through the Cowichan District Hospital (CDH).

The successful candidate will be a member of a team of providers providing mental health care to patients at Cowichan District Hospital and within the Cowichan community. GP psychiatry services will be provided at Cowichan District Hospital’s Psychiatry ward (15 bed open unit), working in collaboration with the Duncan Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) team and psychiatry colleagues to provide inpatient psychiatry care. The successful candidate will similarly support the clinical psychiatry care for those patients seeking mental health care within the Island Health community mental health programs.

The GP Psychiatry services will include the following:

Cowichan District Hospital Inpatient Consultations and Follow-up

Assist with providing coverage alongside psychiatrists for the day call roster, inpatient care and consultation.

Participation in the Cowichan District Hospital Call Schedule

Providing consultative support to the Cowichan District Hospital alongside MOCAP psychiatry call group inclusive of evenings and weekends.

Community MHSU

Work with community mental health teams alongside psychiatry colleagues.

Specific Deliverables:

  • Work collaboratively with Emergency Department, Primary Care, other specialist physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Midwives along with the crisis team and MHSU staff to provide consultation, develop treatment plans and facilitate inpatient care.
  • Educate nursing, MHSU staff, crisis regarding care plan development and in supporting treatment plans.
  • Provide psychiatric assessment, treatment, concurrent patient education and follow-up as appropriate for patients.
  • Complete appropriate clinical documents.
  • Participate in case management meetings and clinical administration meetings.
  • Liaison with other related community institutions and services.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance projects.

Benefits

May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA) including:

  1. Recruitment Incentive: $5000
  2. Relocation: up to $12000
  3. Fee Premium: 4.2%
  4. Annual Flat Fee: $4,834.80
  5. Rural CME: starting at $2,200/annum in years 3 and 4 in community, increasing to a maximum of $4,400/annum after 4 years.

  • Requires licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC)
  • Additional training in Mental Health and/or Addictions desired.
  • Relevant experience working with this population is strongly preferred.
  • Strong commitment to collaborative team-based interdisciplinary practice and excellent communication skills are essential.
