President & CEO and Chief MHO Joint Update

SENT TO ALL STAFF, MEDICAL STAFF, STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS ON BEHALF OF KATHY MACNEIL, PRESIDENT & CEO, AND DR. RICHARDSTANWICK, VP Population Health & Chief Medical Health Officer

马克H 17, 2021

“My 92-year old Grandma was given her first dose of the vaccine on Friday by the amazing @VanIslandHealth team here in Nanaimo. Everything went smoothly, as was expected. Thank you for all you are doing during this pandemic! We are so, SO grateful.”

This statement is one of many emotional and appreciative comments that have been coming in via social media and email this week. It is exactly why we are working so hard to get our vaccine program off the ground in record time, growing from our learnings, and forging ahead to better days. Over the past few days I (Kathy) have visited clinics in Campbell River, Comox Valley, Parksville, Nanaimo and Duncan and had the chance to hear directly from staff, volunteers and members of the public about the positive and incredible impact these clinics are having on individuals and families. At times the days can feel endless, but our hard work is paying off. We can read it in the words and hear it in the voices of those who have been vaccinated, along with those who care for them.

There have been many recent notable successes worth highlighting:

  • Our Facilities, Logistics and Public Health teams have been working at break-neck speed to stand up clinic after clinic. The organization and efficiency of these teams, in collaboration with many programs and community partners, is truly amazing.Check out this fun time-lapse videoof the Archie Browning Sports Centre set-up for a glimpse at what goes in to getting a community clinic ready.

  • From March 3-12, Island Health’s public health teams were incredibly busy vaccinating residents at 60 independent living sites across Island Health’s region. There were many moving parts and it took a team of 878 staff and contractors to deliver 3,860 doses at 60 independent living residences over 10 days. The clinics were a source of hope for these vulnerable members of our community… as well as a rare bit of social time! Read more about that workhere.

  • 在星期五3月12日,所有50个国家communities on Vancouver Island have received access to the COVID-19 vaccine. How the vaccine got there is a richly layered story that Island Health and its partners can learn from for generations to come. Read more about the community-led workhere.

  • In the community, Island Health’s dedicated Community Health Services nurses are visiting homebound clients to ensure they receive a COVID-19 vaccine in a safe andcompassionate manner. Read more about their dedicated servicehere.

  • These stories, and so many more, are filling our cups, inspiring us and reminding us why we do what we do. Please take a moment to reflect on everything that you and your colleagues are doing to get us to the other side of this pandemic together. We are truly grateful!
