It is a good news/bad news kind of Friday. We’ll start with the bad news – the persistent rise in cases of COVID-19 across the province, and here in Island Health. Dr. Bonnie Henry provided more information about variants of concern during her briefing yesterday, particularly as it relates to a recent increase in serious illness in younger people. International data has shown the B.1.1.7 strain first detected in the UK is more transmissible, and now appears to have increased severity of illness in people across the age spectrum. In BC, 19% of hospitalizations for people under age 60 have resulted ICU admission. For the small number of people under age 60 hospitalized with a variant of concern, 30% resulted in ICU admission.

VISITOR RESTRICTIONS IN LONG-TERM CARE AND ASSISTED LIVING EASED

OUTBREAK AT INDEPENDENT LIVING FACILITY
Island Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Longlake Chateau independent living facility in Nanaimo. Eight residents and their close contacts are self-isolating in their homes. Enhanced control measures have been put in place, and Island Health is working with Longlake Chateau leadership and staff to protect the health of all residents and staff.阅读更多。
