President & CEO and Chief MHO Joint Update

SENT TO ALL STAFF, MEDICAL STAFF, STUDENTS AND VOLUNTEERS ON BEHALF OF KATHY MACNEIL, PRESIDENT & CEO, AND DR. RICHARDSTANWICK, VP & Chief Medical Health Officer

APRIL 26, 2021

35thperson to die from this virus in Island Health. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, community and caregivers.

We are also saddened to learn today that a long-time nurse in Fraser Health died earlier this month from COVID complications after a months-long battle with the virus. We know that our nurses, and all members of the Island Health family, share in the grief felt by their colleagues at Peace Arch Hospital, and we offer our condolences.

This trend shows the majority of people in our health region are following public health directions. The number of community acquired cases (unknown source) has also dropped to 14% – having once been as high as 20%. The heightened call to reduce non-essential travel is also having a positive affect – only 2% of new cases in our region in the past seven days are related to travel in BC.

We continue to see high occupancy in our hospitals. This, combined with staffing challenges, has resulted in the difficult decision to postpone some procedures. These are clinical decisions, made on a day-by-day, and case-by-case basis. Last spring, when we faced many unknowns about this pandemic, we reduced all of our surgical procedures to urgent and emergent only. In this latest wave of COVID, we have been able to provide critically needed health services, while managing our staffing needs by optimizing surgical day care and reducing the strain on inpatient procedures. We recognize that even if a procedure is defined as “elective,” to the patient needing it, it is anything but. We want to assure you that postponing any procedure is only done as a last resort.

This year, 150 enthusiastic youth participated in our Step Up Youth volunteer program. Unable to come on-site, they met virtually in small groups to learn about health care and find creative ways to contribute. As a final project one group developed a short video of thanks to all Island Health staff and medical staff. We invite you to听他们说什么.

Island Health has secured enough Moderna vaccine to provide these booster shots, and we anticipate a boost in our Pfizer supply beginning in May – when the weekly shipment in BC is expected to rise to 276,000 doses.
